Your lessons and DVSA recommendations
At Stellar Drive, I want to help you get the very best out of every driving lesson. Good preparation is an important part of becoming a safe, confident and responsible driver. By following a few simple steps and familiarising yourself with the DVSA (Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency) recommendations, you can make the most of your time behind the wheel and work towards passing your driving test.
Before Your Driving Lesson
To get the most out of your lessons, I recommend that you:
Get a good night's sleep – being well-rested will help you concentrate, make decisions and react safely to what's happening around you.
Bring your provisional driving licence – make sure you have the correct licence available when required.
Wear suitable footwear – comfortable shoes with thin, flexible soles will help you feel the pedals and control the car smoothly.
Dress comfortably – choose clothing that allows you to move freely and operate the vehicle safely.
Arrive ready to learn – try to be on time and give yourself a few moments to settle in before your lesson begins.
Ask questions – if there is anything you're unsure about, don't be afraid to ask. Every question is an opportunity to learn.
Think about your previous lesson – consider what went well and what you would like to improve. This helps us build on your progress.
DVSA Recommendations for Learner Drivers
The DVSA provides guidance designed to help learner drivers develop the skills and knowledge needed to drive safely and pass their practical test.
Here are some important recommendations to keep in mind throughout your learning journey:
1. Practise regularly
Regular lessons and suitable private practice, where legally permitted and properly supervised, can help you develop consistency and confidence. Everyone learns at a different pace, so focus on progress rather than comparing yourself with others.
2. Learn the Highway Code
Understanding road signs, road markings, junctions, speed limits and general road safety rules is essential. The Highway Code provides valuable knowledge for both your theory and practical driving tests.
3. Develop good observation skills
Safe driving depends on effective observation, anticipation and planning. Learn to use your mirrors correctly, check blind spots when appropriate and remain aware of other road users, including pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists.
4. Understand the ‘Ready to Pass?’ standard
The DVSA's Ready to Pass? guidance can help you assess whether you're prepared for your practical driving test. You should be able to drive safely and independently, deal with different road and traffic conditions, and demonstrate the skills expected of a competent driver without constant prompting.
5. Practise independent driving
Your practical driving test includes a period of independent driving. During your lessons, we will work towards helping you follow directions, road signs or navigation instructions safely while maintaining good control and awareness.
6. Build confidence in all conditions
As your ability develops, your lessons will help you experience a variety of road layouts and traffic situations appropriate to your level. The aim is to prepare you for everyday driving, not simply for the test itself.
My Commitment to You at Stellar Drive
Learning to drive is about much more than passing a test. It's about developing the knowledge, judgement and confidence to drive safely for life.

Your theory test
Before you can book your practical driving test, you’ll need to pass your DVSA theory test. At Stellar Drive, I want to help you feel confident and prepared for every stage of your driving journey, and that starts with getting your theory test passed!
Your theory test is designed to assess your knowledge of the Highway Code, road signs, traffic laws and safe driving practices. It consists of two parts: multiple-choice questions and a hazard perception test, which assesses your ability to recognise and respond to developing hazards on the road.
How can you prepare?
The key to passing your theory test is regular revision and plenty of practice. I recommend that you:
Study the Highway Code – Familiarise yourself with road signs, road markings, speed limits and the rules of the road.
Practise multiple-choice questions – Use official DVSA revision materials and practice tests to build your knowledge and confidence.
Master hazard perception – Practise recognising developing hazards early and understanding when you need to take action.
Revise little and often – Short, regular revision sessions can be more effective than trying to learn everything at once.
Learn from your mistakes – If you get a question wrong, take the time to understand why, so you’re better prepared next time.
What score do you need to pass?
For the car theory test, you’ll need to achieve:
Multiple-choice section: At least 43 out of 50.
Hazard perception section: At least 44 out of 75.
You must pass both sections in the same test to receive your theory test pass certificate.
My advice to you
Don’t leave your revision until the last minute! The more prepared you are, the more confident you’ll feel when you sit your test. Once you’ve passed, you’ll be one step closer to achieving your goal of becoming a safe, confident and independent driver.
Remember, learning to drive isn’t just about passing a test. It’s about developing the knowledge, awareness and skills that will help keep you and other road users safe for life.
At Stellar Drive, we’re here to support you every step of the way — from your first lesson to the day you pass your practical driving test.

Your practical test
Your practical driving test is an exciting milestone on your journey to becoming an independent and confident driver. It’s your opportunity to demonstrate the skills, knowledge and confidence you have developed throughout your driving lessons.
At Stellar Drive, I will work with you to ensure you are fully prepared for your test, helping you build the confidence and ability needed to drive safely and independently.
What to Expect on Your Practical Test
Your practical driving test is designed to assess your ability to drive safely and responsibly in a variety of road and traffic conditions.
The test will typically include:
* An eyesight check – You must be able to read a number plate from the required distance.
* Vehicle safety questions – You will be asked questions about basic vehicle safety, often referred to as show me, tell me questions.
* General driving – You will drive on different types of roads, demonstrating good observation, judgement, positioning and control.
* Independent driving – You will follow a sat nav or traffic signs for part of the test.
* A reversing manoeuvre – You will be asked to complete one of the reversing exercises selected by the examiner.
* Possibly an emergency stop – The examiner may ask you to demonstrate an emergency stop.
Throughout the test, your examiner will assess your ability to drive safely, make appropriate decisions and respond correctly to changing road conditions.
How to Prepare for Your Test
Preparation is the key to success. Before booking or taking your practical test, you should be confident that you can drive safely and independently without constant guidance from your instructor.
Here are a few important tips to help you prepare:
* Practise regularly and make the most of every driving lesson.
* Become confident with all the required manoeuvres.
* Revise your show me, tell me questions.
* Develop good observation skills, including effective mirror checks and blind-spot awareness.
* Practise independent driving and following road signs.
* Learn to recognise and deal with potential hazards.
* Get plenty of rest the night before your test and arrive in good time.
Remember, your test is not about driving perfectly. It is about demonstrating that you can drive safely, confidently and independently.
